Everyone wants to be on the first page of Google. Many web marketing organisations promise to get your business on the first page of Google. There really is no such thing as the first page of Google and getting your business to appear in the first ten search results is quite simple.
Should your domain name (www.yoursite.com.au), match or be similiar to your business name, you will end up in the first ten results for people searching for your Business. Take Tube Media for example, if you search tube media in Google, we are the first record you will see. This however does little for generating leads through search engines. What is important, is appearing as high as we can in a whole range of keywords, people might use when searching for services that we offer.
The domain name is considered now to be the number one priority when it comes to optimising your website for search engines. We now recommend businesses have at least two domain names. One that matches your business name, that appears on your branding and stationary, and is easy for customers to remember. The second domain may include your business name, but should closely reflect what your business does. Many businesses that I come across, have a domain name which is an abbrieviation of their business name. If this is you, speak to us about changing your domain name now! This is the worst choice you can make when choosing your domain name.
I will give you an example. A client of ours Arbutus Slashing has the domain name http://www.arbutusslashing.com.au on their branding, stationary and signage. In terms of search engine leads, they were poor. We then registered the domain name http://www.propertyslashing.com.au and this is where the website now resides. When users search for property slashing, Arbutus appear at the top of search engine results almost every time, and their contact page is consistently their most visited page, meaning they're generating plenty of leads from their website. When users visit the arbutusslashing.com.au domain, they're automatically redirected to the propertyslashing.com.au domain.
Other key factors you must consider when choosing a domain name is the type of domain name. The most common domain name types used in Australia now are .com,.com.au, .net.au, .org.au, and there are several others not so commonly used. The type you must go for as an Australian business is .com.au. Google detects where you are searching from, and gives preference to websites it believes will be more relevant to your location. The results at the top of search results will predominantly list .com.au domain names.
There are several other factors that determine how your website ranks in search results. Ask your website developer, what they have done to maximise your search engine results. Or contact us at Tube Media and we will provide you with a free analysis report as to what you can do to your website to increase those search engine leads.
